According to a Motorsports News report republished in Racecar Engineering, famed racing name Lotus will be represented at the 2010 Indianapolis 500 with the possibility of a 2012 chassis build.

The effort, titled Team Lotus USA, will initially be a partnership with an existing IndyCar team, but there is speculation that Lotus could be aiming to build their own car for 2012. Only one chassis proposal thus far - DeltaWing - offers teams the option of building their own cars based on an approved spec.

It Would Be Great

But this is fair to point out that this is not the same Lotus founded by the late Colin Chapman. Lotus is now owned by Malaysian company Proton, and I’m not entirely sure, even after reading the Racecar Engineering article, what the motivation would be for this project. It would be cool if it happened, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
