LIGHTNING BOLT!!! LIGHTNING BOLT!!!
"The Friday Setup" will be a preview of the upcoming races and the schedule of the weekend events (practice and qualifications) leading up to race day. Also it will include other forms of rambling about the upcoming race (and the overall state of IndyCar) by yours truly, because I got to somehow bring up the word-count so SBNation will allow the posting of this article/schedule so you can see it. Or something like that.
Stand back. I'm about to drop some racing experience(?!?!) about Mid-Ohio on you...
A few weeks ago, I was playing the iRacing simulator. The track was Mid-Ohio, and the car was the fixed-setup IndyCar. Now I am NOT really that good on the road courses in any car. The last time I tried to practice (a while ago) at Mid-Ohio I was barely getting laps in without mistakes. With an official iRacing series online race session looming, I needed a strategy. I needed something to improve my performance.
My practice lap times weren't too bad, but the tricky mid-section of the course was slowing my lap times the most. To make matters worse was the fact that there obviously will be other cars around me in the race. I needed something to calm the nerves to aid me through the race and not hit anything or anybody...
But what kind, you say? BATTLE MUSIC. No, not Iron Maiden. Not Slayer. Not Metallica. Not Judas Priest. Not any kind of heavy metal, really. I needed an instrumental piece to play in a loop for the duration of the race.
Music in a loop, you say? Of course...VIDEO GAME MUSIC. What better music to go to battle into than...
...music from the most epic of all Nintendo Boss Battles from the greatest 16-bit video game ever??? BAM. So I downloaded the 10-minute extended theme from YouTube and played it in a loop in the background in Windows Media Player.
The result? 4TH PLACE. A Top-5 finish.
...and NO MISTAKES. No contact. No off-course excursions.
To complete the nerd-ness my driver iRating ended up being 1337. I kid you not.
So, the tip of the day: to conquer the tricky blind corners and too-few passing zones of Mid Ohio is to have 16-bit musical mirth on a loop in your radio. Probably. Probably not. Better idea than delaying the Push-To-Pass for 5 seconds, or having it at all. Am I right?
Something's got to entertain Simona in her Lotus back there driving 10 MPH slower than everyone else on the straights.

Iron Maiden Video of the Week - "Rainmaker"
Yep, something new. I sort of started it the Friday before Edmonton, so now we'll have pre-race MAIDEN.
Not only does the Midwest (Hell, most of the country) need it, but this track needs it nearly as bad. Passing will be minimal without it. It's rained during at least one weekend session this year (besides Indy and Texas) so why not once during a road course race?
