This year as many of you already know marks the 100th anniversary of the very first Indianapolis 500. Looking at the schedule of events for the Month of May it seems like a party for the ages. The Centennial is a reason to celebrate like that. However, another important milestone will be reached as the season starts. This year marks the 9th season for the Dallara IR5 chassis....and its FINAL YEAR! Hooray! No more crapwagons! Bring on those aero-kits and twin-turbos!
So what are we supposed to do during this lame-duck session that is the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season? Are we going to see another Penske/Ganassi festival of drama-killing life-sucking LOCKSTEP racing?
As for this weekend, who should we look for to bring the schwerve?
THE FAVORITE (BEST PENSKE/GANASSI DRIVER): WILL POWER
Looking at the speed charts and past history, is there ever any doubt with this guy? Considering how he lost the title and how badly Chip Ganassi embarrassed The Captain it wouldn't surprise me if this guy goes for the weekend hat-trick of pole-lead most laps-win this weekend....and the rest of the road courses. This COULD get ugly early.
THE BEST OF THE REST (BEST NON-PENSKE/GANASSI DRIVER): JUSTIN WILSON
The last time we were on a street-circuit (Toronto) Justin had the lead late and could've/should've won it. Nobody has been waiting for the roadcourses as much as him. He'll be a man on a mission. If anybody can fight the Penske/Ganassi power, it's him.
THE MILKA DUNO BACKMARKER AWARD: SIMONA DE SILVESTRO
Oh noes. For those who don't believe in how important engineers are in IndyCar and how they can affect a team when they leave one week prior to the season, check the speed chart for Practice 1. Practice 2 wasn't much better. Simona can rise above it, but it's going to take time.
